Think Your Home Has Termites? Here's How to Tell
IPM Pest & Termite of Lexington, KY are here to tell you what you need to know about spotting termites in your home.
Having your home inspected for termites or pests may not always be at the forefront of your mind. However, there are three crucial times to make sure you get your home inspected for a termite infestation. Those are when you are buying a new home, selling your old home, and of course, when you notice signs of termites in your home. When it comes to termites, do you really know what you should be looking for? Here at IPM Pest & Termite, we want to give you the scoop on the signs of termites.
Termites love to eat wood and can be found living in wooden structures. Since most homes are constructed out of wood, an infestation can be a big problem and ever bigger cost to homeowners if it’s not stopped. The first step to keeping your home free from these unwanted pests is to be aware of how you may be attracting them. Since we already know that termites enjoy the taste of wood, make sure you keep the food away from the enemy! During the fall and winter season, most people keep a stack of firewood handy, but storing wood close your home can actually attract the termites to you. Always make sure to keep any wood away from your home to prevent this from happening.
However, as cautious as you may be, simply knowing how to keep pest and termites away doesn’t always work. So here are some things to look for if you believe your home may have these pests. Termites leave droppings that look like piles of dirt in the inside and outside of your home. These piles are usually found close to the their tunnels, called shelter tubes. These tubes look like veins running across the structure of you home. Termite shelters can carry large amounts of termites which, if unnoticed, can wreak havoc on your home. You can also tell if your home is infested by termites just by examining the floors or walls in your home. The more a termite and its colony eats, the weaker your floor will become as a result. So when you’re walking around your home, keep that in mind and take notice of any weak spots you come across. You can check for hollow spots in your walls by tapping around on them, and listening for any hollow sounds. If you notice one or more of these signs of termite infestation, let our exterminators know right away, so we can perform an inspection ourselves and start to rid your home of these unwanted pests.
