Autumn Pests and Where to Find Them
As temperatures change from Summer to Autumn, a surge of pests seeks warmth and shelter. As temperatures drop across Kentucky, insects and rodents move indoors, into homes, basements, and garages.
Fortunately, IPM Pest & Termite in Lexington and Louisville can work with you to prevent the fall migration into your home or eliminate the pests if they’ve already moved in. Let’s look at the most common autumn pests in Kentucky and where they like to hide.
Spiders
Every Autumn, spiders infest your warm home, preferring quiet corners in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and attics where they’re unlikely to be disturbed. They hunt for insects and survive the winter in relative peace. The spiders in Kentucky to keep an eye out for are black widows, wolf spiders, and yellow sack spiders.
To prevent spiders in your home, get rid of any clutter, vacuum any webs immediately, and seal all cracks.
Mice and Moles
The first cold snap drives mice inside. They squeeze through dime-sized holes and take refuge in dark spaces—under appliances, in drawers, in walls, and in attics. They’ll build nests, and soon you'll be running a mouse hotel, free of charge.
To prevent this, make sure you seal all entryways into your home to stop them from coming in. Check your cabinetry or crawl spaces for sight of any holes in. You should also clear out clutter, stop dripping water, and put away food if you see signs of mice like food crumbs or animal droppings.
Moles can easily destroy your yard in Fall. The moist soil is ripe with bugs and insects, and they can eat up to 100% of their body weight each day. If they tunnel under your yard, it can create holes and even damage your foundation. We can eliminate them and create barriers that keep them out.
Stink Bugs and Asian Lady Beetles
Sunlight on south-facing walls draws in stink bugs and Asian Lady Beetles each Fall. They’ll slip into wall voids or attics to overwinter. Stink bugs often appear on ceilings or windows. They’re ugly little things that give off an odor when crushed.
Asian lady beetles look like ladybugs, but the orange insects actually eat native ladybugs and can bite. Their yellow secretions can cause allergic reactions in some people.
Cluster Flies and Face Flies
Face flies and cluster flies also move in during Fall. They don't breed or damage property, but they are annoying as they buzz around indoors, coming out when it gets a little warmer and hiding again. We can help you eliminate them with a treatment in Fall.
Termites
Unfortunately, termites remain active year-round in Kentucky. Even worse, the cooler weather often hides their activity underground or inside wood. Fortunately, at IPM Pest and Termite, we have methods to eliminate the entire colony and keep them away. Get your home inspected before the cold weather sets in.
