Why Do Spiders Come Inside During the Fall?
Like every living thing, spiders need food, water, and shelter to survive. Your home has all of these things, with the added benefit of warmth.
At IPM Pest & Termite, we can help you prevent spiders from getting into your home or get them out if you see them.
Learn why spiders go inside in Fall so you can learn how to keep them out.
What to Watch for in Fall
Spiders don’t need warmth to survive, but they still need shelter, water, and food, which drives them inside during Fall. The humidity and cooler temperatures drive them inside because it's where they're more likely to find these things, including prey. Inside, they can enjoy a dark, quiet corner where they can survive the winter. They also want to find a mate.
While you may see more webs in corners, some spiders lurk alone, without webs. They like the dark. They want places where they can hide around boxes and storage areas. You might also notice more spiders running around because they’re looking for mates.
Common Spiders in Kentucky You're Likely to Find Inside
In Kentucky, you’re likely to find several different spiders in your house. You’ll obviously find house spiders that are relatively harmless in their webs. Go ahead and vacuum their webs to chase them out and force them to find a different space.
Wolf spiders are also common, and while these large spiders can be mistaken for the brown recluse, they're not lethal. Most people compare the bite to a bee sting.
Unfortunately, Kentucky also has two dangerous spiders that can cause significant damage: the brown recluse and the black widow. Contact IPM Pest & Termite so we can identify common entry points to keep them out. If you think you see a black widow or a brown recluse:
- The black widow may not be fatal, but it can cause extreme discomfort. It has a recognizable black body with a red hourglass shape on its back.
- The brown recluse likes dark, secluded areas. They have long legs and tan bodies with a violin-shaped patch.
To avoid potential spider bites, shake out bedding and declutter spaces.
When Spiders Will Leave Your Home
As the mating season ends at the end of Fall, spiders will stop coming into your home. The males will also die off, and the females will lay eggs and stop wandering, so you won’t see them as much. While all of these things will drive many spiders inside, including common house spiders, you can reduce their ability to come in. Many species of female spiders die after laying eggs in Spring, so you'll again notice fewer of them.
