A Day in the Life of a Centipede
Yawn, Stretch, time to wake up. It’s another day, well I guess I should say, another night, and I’m ready to forage for food. Just so you know, if you are hunting for me, I like to sleep during the day. Oh, was that you that saw me run across the floor last night? My Bad! My name is Centi and I can run, run, run. My full name is Centipede, that should mean that I have 100 legs, but someone was lying because I don’t have near that many. Most centipedes only have between 7-29 legs, no not pairs of legs, because we never have an even number. Every time I shed my skin I get to have a couple more legs, neat huh! I have some cousins though; wow do they have lots of legs.
But I digress; you were trying to find me weren’t you. If you are looking for my nest, I left it a long time ago; after all I’m almost six years old. Yes I can live that long. I hatched from an egg in a crevice behind your house. I still have brothers and sisters out there living in your rock garden, under that log by the fire pit, and in that leaf pile you left next to the garage. Me, I like to live large and I snuck into the house through a crack in the basement.
You see, really I was trying to get away from this big bird that was trying to eat me, so I snuck in. There are fewer things in here after me although I have to watch out for spiders. But I’m ready, the next one that comes near me will get a shot of the venom I have in the pincers right behind my head. I’ll numb him up and have him for my breakfast. Hmmm, breakfast, maybe today I’ll hunt for an ant or a cricket, too bad you got rid of the roaches because they were tasty. You, you thought I might eat you. No, not my thing! If you catch me I’ll probably try to fight and get you with my venom and that really will sting.
Ok, now really, you are still hunting for me. You can just leave me alone. I’ll stay out of your way. You can have the daylight, I’ll take the night. I’ll stick to the garage or basement where it’s dark and moist. I like that better anyway. Just when I thought I was safe. Uggg! Got me!
If you’ve seen a centipede in your home your pest control experts at IPM Pest and Termite have a solution. Treatment is usually two-fold, chemical and non-chemical. Spraying inside your home is really not effective. The chemical portion consists of treating areas where the centipedes may be entering your home such as around entry pipes, cracks and crevices in the foundation, crawl spaces, under the edge of the siding, and around entry doors. Non-chemical treatment will take some effort from you.
-
Remove the hiding places from around your foundation. The mulch, grasses, and leaf piles around the foundation need to be raked up. Remove any old boards, or boxes that might provide moist, dark hiding spots.
