The city of Nicholasville is located in Jessamine County, Kentucky. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, it has a population of over 28,015 residents. Nicholasville is the eleventh largest settlement in the state of Kentucky. In the span of forty years, Nicholasville experienced rapid growth. In 1798, Nicholasville was founded. The name was chosen to honor Colonel George Nicholas, who fathered the Kentucky Constitution in 1792. The earliest census available for the settlement recorded a population of 158 in 1810. The city was incorporated on February 13, 1837. 

Downtown Nicholasville is about six miles south of Fayette County. The city functions as a commuter and logistics hub for Lexington and the neighboring counties to Nicholasville, predominately Garrard County. The city largely serves as a residential site, as many residents work in adjacent towns. 

The city has a wide distribution of age. The median age of residents in the city is 33.1 years. Roughly 31% of the population falls within the age range of 25 to 44. The amount of residents that are under the age of eighteen accounts for 28% of the total populace. The area has a higher inhabitance of women than men. For every man, there are approximately nine women.

The government of Nicholasville operates under a non-partisan city commission, which is comprised of four commissioners and an elected mayor. All of the positions require the candidate to achieve support of the majority in order to be selected. The mayor serves a four-year term, while the commissioners only serve for a period of two years. There was a proposal in 2012 to switch the city government to a mayor-council system, but it was ultimately rejected. Commissioners carry legislative, executive, and administrative powers. The mayor only encompasses legislative powers equal to that of which the commissioners possess.  

Nicholasville hosts the yearly Kentucky Wine and Vine Fest. The festival exhibits products from commercial vineyards and apprentice winemakers from the entire state and surrounding areas. In 2014 the Kentucky General Assembly established the event as the definitive wine festival of Kentucky. The downtown area is undergoing a revival, as new businesses are opening up.
